What's It All About?

Here's A Glimpse

Workforce Development & Its Correlation with Social Enterprise

Workforce Development is the field dedicated to preparing low-skilled workers to gain and retain employment in industries that provide opportunities for advancement but do not require a postsecondary degree. Colette Stanzler, the director of Social Innovation Research, will give an overview of the report SIR issued on workforce development in Massachusetts. The report focuses on job training for adults facing multiple barriers to employment, including but not limited to lack of work experience, past criminal record, and homelessness.

As described by Carla Javitz, president of REDF, many social enterprise businesses use a workforce development model as a powerful, cost-effective solution to chronic unemployment. These social enterprises blend job creation, economic development, and training. Businesses are created for the explicit purpose of hiring hard to employ workers, including at-risk youth and those affected by homelessness and incarceration. Run by non-profit organizations, these enterprises are cost-effective because they cover all or a significant portion of their costs through earned income.

Social Enterprise Summit 2011

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Massachusetts Chapter of the Social Enterprise Alliance launched one year ago, in the spring of 2010. Since that time, we’ve been building our board, expanding our membership, setting our strategies, and reaching out to like-minded organizations throughout the state to look for ways we can collaboratively build a robust field of social enterprise here in Massachusetts. Specifically, we are focusing on opportunities for learning and networking and advocating for policies and initiatives that help social enterprises to grow and thrive.
